about

Review by Kissmeinthegutter:

Butcher Shed Records advertises itself as a vehicle for all things "sludge, doom, doom-death, black death, prehistoric doom death."

...Whatever "prehistoric doom death" means, Anti-Life Order's demo, "Vampiric Songs of Vengeance" is right at home on the label. This demo is surely what Saint Vitus would sound like in a nightmare, with a guitar tone devoid of treble and lagging drums, thoroughly haunted by cavernous vocals that switch from black highs to death lows. Shockingly this release is free of time-wasting intros and outros, so I personally got the $8 I paid for.

The tempo drags disconcertingly, unconcerned with speeds ordinary frostbitten black metal strives for. Here, less is more - the primal drumming is a blend of black metal rigor mortis and doom's tribal flourishes, sometimes sputtering along, and other times precise touches to the guitar.

Nazghul's guitar tone is thick like mud, and the riffs are not dissimilar from what groovy licks manage to escape Dave Chandler's rig, save for the fact that these are all tremolo riffs being performed underwater. Earworms they are though, down to the nastiness.

I'm personally a big fan, although the simplistic songwriting and hummed production reduces everything to a blurry, repetitive noise that requires your attention to differentiate everything past the first track. Still though, at 6 tracks spread across 25 minutes, nothing overstays its welcome.
